Screening
We are very excited to have added Tomosynthesis or 3D mammography in May of 2013 to our cadre of available testing procedures for patients. This is the most-advanced technology available today for screening and allows the radiologist to view the breast tissues in 1 mm thin segments – like turning the pages of a book. With Tomosynthesis, significantly more pre-cancers and cancers can be found earlier and with greater accuracy.
In addition, with 3D mammography there is less need for some additional views or recalls for findings that are benign. The difference in 2D and 3D mammography technically for the patient is that the compression of the breast is the same. With 3D mammography the x-ray tube sweeps over the breast for a couple of seconds. The radiation dose in the 3D is slightly higher than with 2D but it is well within the allowable standards of the American College of Radiology. In our opinion, the 3D is far superior to 2D for both screening and diagnostic mammography.
